后羿在的时候，天上有十个太阳，烧得草木，庄稼枯焦，后羿为了救百姓，一连射下九个太阳，从此地上气候适宜，万物得以生长。他又射杀死了猛兽毒蛇，为民除害。民间因而奉他为“箭神”。
故事内容大致为古时候天上有十个太阳, 人们难耐高温，地上寸草不生。后羿力大无比 , 为了百姓能够安居乐业，求了射日弓，射掉了九个太阳,剩下现在的一个太阳, 使温度适宜人们居住。寓意是象征远古时代劳动人民征服自然的决心
